The best, cheapest and quickest way to book a flight, car rental (and accommodation if you wish) is to book directly on the Internet.
The Web has enormously simplified the process of comparing fares and prices of different operators, which previously required dozens of phone calls. Not only that: by cutting out the middlemen, one can save money for not having to pay the travel agency's share. The same information once provided by travel agents is now freely available over the Internet. Not surprisingly, travel is predicted as the greatest category of online sales of next century. An ever-increasing number of travels and holidays is booked on the Internet. It's calculated that within 5 years, 45 % of the UK population will book all holidays through the Net.
Where to start, then? There are two possibilities: either visit the airlines' websites or visit the sites of so-called aggregators, which provide information on a vast array of companies and operators. Here we have selected a number of travel sites which offer comprehensive information and booking facilities for UK flights and car rental.
A leading travel specialist is Expedia, a comprehensive travel site for all sorts of needs, from flights to hotels, from car rentals to holiday packages, from holiday deals to guides and insurance.
Here's the Expedia search box to find flights, cars and hotels according to your preferences. Flights are for UK residents, cars and hotels for residents of every part of the world:

UK travel. Visas & pets
Whether a visa is required to enter Britain or not, depends on where a visitor is from and the purpose of his/her
visit.
American travellers to the UK only need a valid passport; a visa is not required. Citizens of the European Union countries can enter the UK with a simple identity card valid for going abroad.
Other nationals should contact their nearest British Consulate, local
British Tourist Authority Office or travel agent.
Broadly speaking, visitors coming from all countries in the world require a visa, with the exception of the American continent, Australasia, a few South African countries and Western Europe. There are exceptions to this rule (for instance, Ecuador and some other Latin American countries require a Visa), but this is a valid general guideline.
For further information, contact: HM Customs and Excise, New Kings Beam House, 22 Upper Ground, London SE1 9JP. Tel. ++44 - 20 -7620 1313.
As for pets, fortunately the terrible quarantine laws seem to be a thing
of the past, at least as far as animals from and to Western European countries are concerned.
The relatively new Pet Travel Scheme, launched a few years ago, only applies to Western European countries. It's better to be careful, because pets taken illegally from and to other countries can be killed if discovered. It lets animals into the UK if accompanied by a kind of passport as proof of vaccinations against rabies. It applies to only some ports of entry, among which Folkestone, Dover and Portsmouth. If you travel by air, Heathrow Airport in theory is OK but airlines like British Midland are still waiting for permission to fly pets under the
scheme.
Another limitation is that six months must have passed since inoculation of your pet before he or she will
be allowed into the UK.
For further information contact: Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Government Buildings (Toby Jug Site), Hook Rise South, Tolworth, Surbiton, Surrey KT6 7NF, England. Tel. ++44 - 20 - 8330 4411. Or your nearest British Consulate or British Tourist Authority office.

AIRLINES WITH SCHEDULED AND CHARTER FLIGHTS
Among Britain's major airlines are Business Air, British Airways, British Midland, KLM UK and Virgin Atlantic. British Airways is the largest. British Midland is the UK's second largest scheduled airline and the second largest operator at Heathrow airport.
Charter flights' prices vary according to the season and the company. Sometimes it's possible to get reduced fares, on certain flights and services, or for groups and students. Ask the airlines offices or your travel agent. A company offering low air fares (but usually limited to a certain number of seats or to some flights) is the Irish Ryanair. Do not expect a great amount of space on the airplane, though, and they don't serve in-flight meals. The phone number of Ryair in the United Kingdom is 0870 333 1231.
