This is a summary of guests' reviews that well represent the general feeling:
"The hotel was right in the middle of a lot of historic sites. For the price it was a great place to stay, clean and well kept, air conditioned, and close to public transportation. We really had a great time." "The location could not be more central for ancient Rome, we throughly enjoyed our stay." "We've enjoyed our stay in Hotel Romano. Rooms with a large live-in terrace with a pleasant view are available on the top floor.
A summary of typical guests reviews: "Concluding our trip throughout Southern Italy, starting in Rome, Hotel Laurentia is one of the hotels we would recommend to other travellers. A special offer (50€ and 60€ for a room with terrace, per night per room) made it possible for us, budget travellers, to stay in Hotel Laurentia. Accommodation in Italy is generally expensive, but the price of this hotel was fairly reasonable. Bear in mind that the so-called more colourful pensions (rather than hotels) are more expensive than Hotel Laurentia. When we compare price/quality of Hotel Laurentia with other hotels we stayed in during our trip, Hotel Laurentia ranks on top of the list. Friendly, English speaking staff, nice atmosphere, authentic neighbourhood, clean rooms, included buffet breakfast." "Located near the train station where the metro lines cross means you can get anywhere in minutes, without having to pay the price of staying near a major tourist attraction." "The location is 15-20 min from the Termini on foot." "We were very happy with our stay at this hotel. I must say, it could even be a 4 star hotel!! very clean and extremely good service!" "Nice middle-class hotel in the University District. Many Bars and Restaurants close by. Reconstruction of large public square in front of the hotel should be finished by fall 2003. Most sights and the Termini station can be reached from the hotel in 10-25 min walk."

A summary of guests reviews:
"Good location! Two blocks from the Termini station and one block from a supermarket."
"Coming to the Georgina was an excellent choice: The price is low, and it's clean, safe and comfortable. We especially appreciated the high ceiling and windows, allowing air to come in at night. Tiled floors and bathroom, and very simple decoration just added to the clean and comfortable impression. Having a safe in the room was also good. Travellers should consider the following when making a hotel choice in Rome: - The location close to Termini is very convenient when arriving in and departing from Rome. It is also excellent because of the metro lines that cross there, as well as the starting point of many bus lines. However, it is not particularly athmospheric. The upside is the choice of excellent budget eating alternatives. Thanks for an excellent stay, we'd chose you again!"
"We picked this hotel because it is so central and yet surprisingly affordable. We were not disappointed. Given the price we were surprised at how spacious and clean the room was. In addition the en-suite bathroom was impeccable. The surrounding area is not the most pleasant (being right next to the train station) but we never felt in any danger at all which, compared to walking around the equivalent in London, is surprising. Overall, if you're on a budget and don't want to take public transport this is an excellent place to stay."
"Very happy with this hotel. As a regular visitor to Rome I would certainly stay here again. Central location and one of the best breakfasts in a hotel of this standard and location I have received."
"Perfect location near Termini station."
"This is an Excellent hotel that is very convenient to the main train station (two blocks) and all old city locations. We walked everywhere including the Vatican. The room was perfect with new tile and bathroom and service was excellent."
"This was a cheap hotel that was picked and mainly used as a base. There weren't any frills, but that wasn't what I was paying for, I found the hotel staff to be competent and welcoming, and I was charged the exact price quoted. I am very pleased with the service offered by the hotel."
"Small basic clean accomodation with helpful reception staff."
"Reception desk help courteous and spoke English. Clean rooms (could use a little updating) but were spacious. We had a 5 twin bedded room and needed to add a 6th and we still had walking room."
"The room was clean and spacious as we had 4 people in 3 twin beds and a double bed and still had plenty of room. The staff were courteous and conveniently located."

A summary of guests reviews:
"I would highly recommend. For Rome the Quality to Price is excellent (Rome is just expensive so lower your expectations!). RomAntica provided excellent rooms - very clean which is crucial to me, and modern. Above what I would have expected for a 2 star: room serviced every day - new towels - MTV channel! Staff were very helpful (English OK with right person!) providing good tips on where to shop and moving us into a bigger room, extending our stay etc (we stayed for 4 nights). Our room was like the picture on the web site (recently renovated). Breakfast is standard European one with rolls, juice and coffee but never a shortage. Good location as close to central train/metro station, walking distance to most sites and as in a backpacker type area, was close to cheap restaurants."
"Very warm welcome, competent employees, nice and polite. Price/quality is excellent: 75 $ for 2 Persons with (real) breakfast, 3 Minutes walk to Termini or St. Maggiore, 10 minutes walk to colloseum, 15 minutes walk to spanish stairs, perfect. Almost 3 Star Level. Thanks for nice days in Roma."
"We would highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are spotless and very comfortable and the staff are friendly and extremely helpful. We will certainly be staying there again."

Rome flea markets

PORTA PORTESE

Porta Portese is perhaps the longest market you will ever see. It has everything, both new and old: clothes, shoes, leather, food, bric-a-brac, and old taps. To help skip half a kilometer of the junkier stalls, we recommend you arrive at Via Ippolito Nievo. Porta Portese is only open Sunday mornings, sunrise to 1:30pm. Try to get there before 9am to avoid the worst crowds. To get here from Termini, catch bus 40 Express or 64 to Largo Argentina, then Tram 8 to Piazza Ippolito Nievo. From the Vatican area, catch bus 23 from Piazza Risorgimento, get off at Piazza G.G. Belli (Ponte Garibaldi), then pick up Tram 8.

Treasures and trinkets clutter toe Porta Portese flea market. This Sunday-morning market is long and spindly, running between the actual Porta Portese (a gate in the old town wall) and the Trastevere train station. Starting at Porta Portese, walk through the long, tacky parade of stalls selling cheap bras and shoes. Along the way, check out the con artists with the shell games. Each has shills in the crowd "winning big money" to get suckers involved. Hang on to your wallet — literally in your front pocket. This is a den of thieves.
The heart of the market for real flea-market junk (hiding a few little antique treasures) is the area from Piazza Ippolito Nievo to the Trastevere station (6:30-13:00 Sunday only, on Via Portuense and Via Ippolito Nievo; to get to the market from Rome's main train station, catch bus #75).

OTHERS

The market at Via Sannio has mainly clothing and shoes, new and used. It is open Mon-Sat, 8:30am-1:30pm. Metro Line A: San Giovanni. Once you come out of the metro station, as you face the ancient Roman walls, Via Sannio is the street on the left just before the walls.

And if you keep your eyes open or check the local paper, you will find some of Rome's interesting garage sales, which are common on Sundays. The Borghetto Flaminio garage sale takes place in a former bus depot on alternate Sundays.

Rome

Innovations have been added to Rome, like a new entrance to the Vatican Museums, to avoid the long outdoor queues seen so far, and a new underpass to the Vatican.
Several hotels in Rome have been restructured and refurbished. On the Via Veneto alone, the street of La Dolce Vita, the Flora, the Regina Baglioni and the Majestic can be added to the list of hotels in Rome already adapted to Via Veneto and Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

Roman urban transports have been improved, with an extension to Rome's underground system, extra trams, and Linea J. This is a series of new bus routes designed to supplement the ATAC, COTRAL and FS routes already in operation in Rome. Since a few years ago, 112 new air-conditioned buses serve 8 new routes, covering the majorityof main tourist attractions in Rome and stop-off points, including Termini railway station, the Basilicas, the Catacombs, the Forum and the Colosseum. Intelligent bus stops indicate the location of buses, timetables and waiting times. There are multilingual staff on the buses in Rome to provide information and assistance.
