Milan
Milan must be the most underestimated city in the world, as far as artistic and historical treasures go. The reason is obviously the fact that it's in Italy, where its standing pales when compared to such giants of historical artistic heritage as Rome, Florence and Venice, not to mention the myriad of Italian cities, towns, regions and even villages which host an incredible wealth of monuments, historical buildings and art collections, to an extent that the rest of the world cannot begin to equal.
In a country like Italy, Milan appears a Cinderella in terms of aesthetic and historical value. Yet, if Milan happened to be in any other country of the world, it would be considered as its number one tourist attraction.
Just consider that in Milan there is the only original fresco painted by Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper, in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. That in itself would be enough to put Milan top of the list.
But there's much more. For example the Duomo, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture; the Castello Sforzesco, the castle of the Sforza family, ancient lords of the city; the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery and indeed the whole district of Brera.
